Radio Silence clocks play an important role in maritime safety, with their implementation spurred on by the tragedy of RMS Titanic.

The radio signalling equipment carried onboard Titanic was of little use since her distress signals went unheard for several hours. One outcome of the disaster was the introduction of the radio silence – a 3-minute period immediately following each quarter hour reserved exclusively for making, and listening for, distress calls.

Radio room clocks have traditionally been marked with these silence periods as guidance for the operators. The green sectors on the clock face represent silence periods on the SSB (single side band) distress frequency of 2182kHz, as used by commercial, and some pleasure, crafts. The red sectors are for Morse code distress signals on the 500kHz band, as used in radiotelegraphy.

Our stylish Fitzroy radio silence clock has a QuickFix system allowing you to mount it securely yet remove it in seconds. It comes supplied with a base plate, which attaches to a wall or bulkhead (instructions and drill hole template included). Simply slot the clock over the base plate, and with a gentle twist lock it on. A reverse twist removes it again. This makes changing the battery easy, and because you don’t have to screw the clock down there’s no danger of scratching the case!

These instruments are finished with a super-durable protective coating using advanced surface treatment technology. More durable than lacquer or varnish, this coating is tarnish free.
